Darany Recognizes the 100th Anniversary of the Girl Scouts

March 13, 2012 By News Release

LANSING, Michigan – State Representative George T. Darany’s (D-Dearborn) House Resolution 194 passed the House of Representatives with strong bipartisan support on Thursday, March 1.

This resolution commemorates the 100th anniversary of the Girl Scouts on March 12, 2012.

“The Girl Scout organization is an amazing program that empowers girls and teaches the values of honesty, fairness, character, conduct and service,” said Darany. “I was honored to offer this resolution recognizing the 100th anniversary of the Girl Scouts and I am thankful to my colleagues in the House for supporting HR 194.”

The Girl Scouts were founded on March 12, 1912, in Savannah, Georgia, by Juliette Gordon Low and Girl Scouts of the USA was chartered by the United States Congress on March 16, 1950. Today, there are approximately 2.5 million girls who participate in scouting and 900,000 adult members who work primarily as volunteers throughout the nation. Girl Scouts of the USA is the largest organization for girls in the world and is part of a worldwide family of 10 million girls and adults in 145 counties.

“The mission of Girl Scouts is to build girls of courage, confidence, and character who make the world a better place,” said Darany. “We are very fortunate to have an organization as dedicated to the well-being and success of our young people as the Girl Scouts have been throughout the past 100 years. The Girl Scouts should be commended for their exemplary work within communities and for helping girls reach their full potential. I am pleased to wish the Girl Scouts a happy 100th birthday and I congratulate all of the girls and women in Michigan who participate or who have participated in Girl Scouting.”
